Traditional Perfume Extraction Process

Overview

Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh

The city of Kannauj grew around the silted soil of the Ganga, which flowed much closer than it does in current times. Initially agrarian, Kannauj grew into a trading city and the perfume capital of India. The perfumeries came to exist around 400 years ago since the time of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. The initial agrarian settlement grew around the Ganges in 1200 BCE. The Chemkali temple was built under the reign of King Harsha of the Vardhan Dynasty, around 6th century CE and has served as a multicultural social space to the residents.

The trading city that subsequently developed adjacent to it evolved with a central spine called the Bada Bazaar. Along the spine were located kothis of perfume traders who had perfumeries in their backyards. They sold their perfumes called ittar from these kothis. The bada bazaar slowly densified to hold shops and houses of traders who sold attar along the bazaar street. Over the years a rich cultural mix of hindu and muslim cultures and their respective institutions has evolved, although in recent years there has been communal tension in the region.
